The Gist: Ten years after toxic blue-green algae devastated parts of the St. Lucie River, officials and environmental leaders gathered in Stuart to look at how far restoration efforts have come. One of the biggest projects, the roughly $4 billion EAA Reservoir, is expected to be completed around 2030.

Why It Matters: Treasure Coast residents who were here in 2016 remember just how bad the river got. Today, major restoration projects are helping move more water south toward the Everglades and reduce damaging Lake Okeechobee discharges into the St. Lucie Estuary.

The Gist: Four years after Hurricane Nicole destroyed the Humiston Beach boardwalk, Vero Beach is moving closer to rebuilding it. The city has about $3.1 million toward the estimated $4.7 million project and hopes to begin construction in November.

Why It Matters: The missing boardwalk has made it harder for some residents to enjoy the beachfront, especially those with mobility challenges. If fundraising and construction stay on track, the familiar walkway could be back by April.
